Working from home online is not an easy task. That is why I had to write these interesting facts about working online.
Landing a work-at-home job is, in fact, a bigger challenge than working from home. You are only halfway there when you decide to work online, the challenging path to land your online high-paying job can be a long one.
Many work-at-home job seekers give up their dream of working in an online job, as soon as they start facing some hurdles in their search.
I was in the same situation many years ago, but I knew if I was persistent then finding a good work-from-home job was possible. And I did.
Though the number of remote jobs has increased now, so has the number of job seekers who are applying for them. This brings me to my number one fact.
1. Competition is high
Just like the competition is with any other job offline, so is are online Jobs.
No matter what kind of job you are eyeing, there will be tight competition for it. If you have worked in a 9-5 job and this is your first foray into the work from the home market, do not expect fast results with your application process.
The massive competition for this market is primarily because of the flexibility telecommuting jobs offer. To make yourself stand out from the crowd, enhancing your skillset, highlighting any experience, and stressing your strong points can help.
2. Working online is a Job
This is the point I missed out on when starting to venture into online jobs. I thought I could land some job online, create an account, and just like magic money would start flowing into my account.
The truth is that there is No easy money online and for you to make good money you have to work hard enough to earn it. In fact, you may be required to work just as your employed counterpart is working.
3. Take time to learn
If your goal is to get a work-from-home job, then I strongly suggest you work on acquiring particular skills. Even if you got a Ph.D. in some course, this won’t help if you do not take your time to learn about working online.
There are many in-demand industries in the work-from-home market, and it can be very profitable if you learn these skills.
For example, virtual assisting is one such industry that is going strong right now and is expected to grow a lot in the coming years. Learning the necessary skills can take you a long way especially when it comes to working from home.
Online learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and Skillshare can be beneficial if you want to learn new skills.
4. Be disciplined
You ought to build your online character to be as presentable as it would be if you were to walk into some offices and ask for a job. Among the virtues, you need to learn are patience, consistency, and honesty. If you miss out on any of these then you are just yet to be fit for the industry.
5. Scammers are real
I cannot stress enough the fact that when you first start looking for work from home jobs, be super critical about every opportunity you see. Not all remote jobs are authentic.
Of all the scams, two major types are data entry and mystery shopping gigs. Both of these scams are too prevalent and most online job seekers fall prey to this. Though there are online data entry jobs available, they do not pay very high, so any role promising a huge salary would probably be a scam.
There is no shortcut to earning a good income, so if a remote job ad promises an insane amount of income, it’s a big red flag.
Most of the work-at-home job seekers fall prey to these scams because they are desperate to land a job and this pushes them to get into dodgy work-at-home scams.
6. Deliver Quality
Just like any other job, the quality of the product or service you deliver will matter your success. Take your time to polish your skills or product before delivering.
7. Focus on the right resource
Before you even start applying for work from jobs. Do thorough research on the right kind of remote job resources. There are many legitimate work-at-home job boards, blogs, and directories that advertise remote jobs from many industries.
You can also sign up for Google Alerts with terms like ‘work-at-home jobs’ or ‘remote jobs’. By doing this you will get regular weekly emails about your chosen keywords.
Always do your research and have some trustworthy websites bookmarked before you start applying the process.
8. Build a personal brand
I know this one is quite different from the topic but it is very important to mention it. Online jobs are competitive and or they may not last long, at some point tasks may not be there. Or, companies may choose to lay off workers. That means your job security isn’t guaranteed.
In such a case, I highly recommend that you start building an own brand. Some quick models you can venture into are making a youtube channel, starting a blog, building a Tik Tok channel, building a Facebook group or page, etc.
If you are dreaming of working from home online, you need to start focusing on the above things even before you begin the actual process. Getting a remote job is not hard if you work on some key points and are open to learning and improving your skills.
As much as you can make money employed online. I love it when you can be self-employed online and have your own brand make money for you while you are asleep. You can check No. 8.
